“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” This quote, said by Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird has a lot of meaning behind it. Basically, it’s saying how it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because of their innocence. They don’t do any harm, all they do is sing. This quote also shows how it is a sin to kill the innocent, since mockingbird’s are innocent. To Kill a Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee. She first published the book in the 1960’s, and it is the only novel she has ever written. Ever since then, it has been a great novel, even to this day. Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926. Harper Lee has gained a large amount of fame due to this novel. Harper Lee based her book off of her childhood, due to the racism that had been going on, and even some of the characters were inspired from her childhood, such as Dill, who is based off of her old childhood neighbor/friend.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel which is seen through the eyes of a young child named Scout Finch, as she narrates the events going on in a district she lives in called Maycomb County. Scout tells the many events that go on in Maycomb, such as a death trial, many mysterious characters, and even a man getting stabbed. Many of these events change the course of the book, and the attitude of many of the characters and the way they see things. For example, Scout’s brother, Jem, changes his attitude throughout most of the book due to many of the events going on. This goes for a lot of characters in the story, which makes the story very interesting.
To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in a district named Maycomb County, located in Alabama. It is a very small district, making the story involve a majority of the neighborhood. The time this novel took place in was the early 1930’s, which is when racism was common. Racism played a major role in this book, due to the court involving Tom Robinson, and how Atticus Finch defended him, unable to see racism. Also, this book involved a lot of foreshadowing. It made the book very interesting, because there were little hints that lead up to major events which changed the course of the book.
This novel also involves a lot of racism throughout the entire story. Racism especially takes place during the trial, when Tom Robinson is accused of raping a white female named Mayella Ewelle. Even though Atticus held up a very powerful defense against the raging Ewelle’s, The quote in the first paragraph mentions how it is a sin to kill the innocent, which ties up really well with this whole issue of racism. THey are trying to convict Tom , an innocent man, so it was like reflecting upon killing the innocent.
In our opinion, this story deserves about a 4 and a half out of 5 Hams. The STORY LINE was amazing, and all the characters had a large amount of detail, along with the major events going on in the story. The only reason this story is rated 4 out of 5 is because the vocabulary seems to be unbalanced at times, and the book gets confusing near the beginning. However, the book flows nicely with the events, and it definitely makes the reader become interested in what they’re reading. We would suggest this book to teenagers around the ages of 13+, because it can help enhance their vocabulary as well. Overall, To Kill a Mockingbird was an amazing book, worth our time reading, and worth our time discussing these events which changed the entire course of the story.
